Indigenous Tutoring and Mentorship Program:

SFU Academic Summer Camp for Aboriginal Students : This camp takes place every summer. It is organized and supported by the Pacific Institute for Mathematical Sciences, the SFU Faculty of Science, the SFU Office for Aboriginal Peoples, and the SFU Department of Mathematics.  We invite Aboriginal students currently in Grades 9 -11 to apply.  Information for the 2018 camp.  (Middle School, High School)

Shannon’s Dream  “Shannen Koostachin, a youth education advocate from of the Attawapiskat First Nation in Ontario, had a dream: safe and comfy schools and culturally based education for First Nations children and youth.” Although she died tragically at the age of 15, her actions towards achieving the dream of equal education opportunities on Reserve for her and her friends has taken root with other First Nations children, who continue to fight for Shannon’s Dream. Jordan’s Principle  ” Jordan was a First Nations child from Norway House Cree Nation in Manitoba. Born with complex medical needs, Jordan spent more than two years unnecessarily in hospital while the Province of Manitoba and the Federal government argued over who should pay for his at home care. Jordan died in hospital at the age of five years old, never having spent a day in a family home. ”  The court case that followed created the policy of proper care being given to a child and paid for while governments can settle the “who pays” issue.

Orange Shirt Day.org : “Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in the spring of 2013. …. The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. …. Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.” (Primary, Intermediate, Middle School, High School)

Beyond 94 – Truth and Reconciliation in Canada : This is a CBC created website challenging Canadians to be actively involved in reconciliation efforts, and encouraging teachers to have conversations with their students.  This article by Lenard Monkman further explains the mandate of this website. The site provides up-to-date status reports on each call to action, as well as extensive summaries explaining those status reports. It includes in-depth features and short video documentaries that tell some of the community stories behind the calls to action.
